Social Saturday Program
Saturday Adult Day Health Care for individuals with memory loss in Huntington Beach, CA.
Alzheimer’s Family Center (AFC), an adult day services provider that exclusively specializes in dementia care, offers a Saturday program for its Orange County patients. The center, which has been providing dementia-specific services for over 36 years, launched its weekend program in response to the expressed need of family caregivers for time off on weekends to run errands, get some much needed rest, or catch up with friends – all while knowing that their memory-impaired loved one is cared for in a safe, therapeutic, and friendly environment.
Dementia caregivers need respite during the weekend.
“We believe it is very important for family caregivers to be able to get respite during the weekend,” said Joanna Richardson-Jones, Chief Executive Officer at AFC. “A good amount of the caregivers we serve have a full-time job and a family to care for, sometimes with small children or teenagers, on top of caring for a loved-one with dementia. It is only natural that they appreciate being able to get some extra respite on Saturdays and spend some time with their spouse, children, grandchildren, or friends. All of our programs are tailored to the needs of individuals with Alzheimer’s or another dementia, and include a variety of cognitive activities and physical exercises in a social, fun, and completely safe and secure environment.”
AFC’s Social Saturday program, which was launched in September 2015, has already allowed hundreds of caregivers to get some weekend time off.
“I truly appreciate the Social Saturday Program offered by the center. Before the program started, my mom would only go to Alzheimer’s Family Center one day per week. It was a lot of work for me since I am also taking care of my 2 year-old grandson. Knowing that my mom is really well taken care of, I can have some time off with my husband during the weekend. My family and I go bike riding or to the movies on Saturdays, which are things we wouldn’t have been able to do together otherwise. It has been a true lifesaver for me.” -Priscilla, primary caregiver of her mother, who has been an AFC’s patient for 5 years.
The program is currently only available to patients who are already enrolled in the center’s weekday services.
